Car fuel prices are no joke these days. Prices are dropping a bit, but they are still much higher than normal. Fortunately, there are ways to lower your fuel costs! In this blog, we provide several tips to help you find cheaper prices and consume less fuel in the Netherlands.
The most obvious way to save money is by finding the cheapest fuel near you.
Tip 1: Compare prices online. There are various websites and even an app that show you the cheapest gas stations near you. Visit https://www.brandstof-zoeker.nl download or ANWB Onderweg app!
Tip 2: Avoid gas stations along the highway. Usually, fuel is most expensive at gas stations located on or close to the highway. If you cannot use tip 1, look for fuel in villages or towns. Most gas stations display their prices on large billboards, so look out for the cheapest price.
Tip 3: Buy fuel abroad. If you live near the German or Belgian border, you can find cheaper fuel in those countries. However, avoid the gas stations along the highway!
Once you have found cheaper fuel, try to make it last longer!
Tip 1: Drive as smoothly as possible. Avoid accelerating too quickly or braking too suddenly. Try to anticipate, accelerate gradually, and take your foot off the gas early so you don't have to brake as much. This can save you 10-20% of fuel!
Tip 2: Check your tire pressure. Low tire pressure increases the resistance of your tires. When your tires have an optimal pressure, you consume less fuel per kilometer. You can read more about maintaining proper tire pressure in our blog about car maintenance in the Netherlands.
Tip 3: Lower your speed. Generally, cars are most fuel-efficient at a speed of 60-80 km/h in the highest gear. As your speed increases, your fuel consumption per km also goes up.
Tip 4: Reduce your weight. Remove heavy objects from your car and see your fuel consumption drop! Remove unnecessary items from your trunk and leave bike racks and other accessories at home when you are not using them.
Tip 5: Reduce your mileage. Try to use your car less often. Combine your trips and sometimes choose to ride a bike!
