8 tips to save energy at home

April 10, 2026

You've probably noticed that prices for almost everything are rising this year. Energy prices, in particular, are rising sharply. The price of natural gas in the Netherlands is now 239% higher than it was in August 2021. The price of electricity has risen by 204% since then!

Nobody likes a screaming wallet, so fortunately there are a number of ways to lower your energy bill. There is the obvious solution of installing solar panels and other energy-saving technology, but in this blog we will help you save money without spending money first.

Heating the house

Most people in the Netherlands spend about 50% of their energy consumption on heating their homes. It should come as no surprise that this is where you can easily save the most money!

Tip 1: Do not heat your whole house. In most Dutch homes, heaters can be controlled in every room. Turn off the heating in rooms where no one is, such as bedrooms – for example, by turning off the knob on the heater itself.

Tip 2: Keep the doors closed. Closing exterior doors and windows is the most obvious way to save energy. But closing all the doors inside the house can also make a big difference! The heating in every room will work more efficiently and no cold air will be able to draft through your house.

Tip 3: Turn down the thermostat by 1 degree. It may seem surprising, but this can significantly lower the bill! If you are well-dressed and active around the house, even 19 degrees should already be comfortable.

Tip 4: Set the thermostat to 15 degrees at night. Try to do this an hour before you go to bed, then snuggle under the covers! Research has shown that sleep quality improves in a cold, dark environment. Win-win!

Tip 5: Leave the thermostat at 15 degrees when nobody is home during the day. Why spend money on heating a house where nobody is? If you have a smart thermostat, you can program it to heat up just before the first person comes home.

Electronics

In the Netherlands, households spend about 37% of their total energy consumption on electricity. Start saving money by following these quick tips:

Tip 1: Use LED lighting. LED bulbs use 85-90% less energy than other types of bulbs! Even energy-saving bulbs consume much more energy than LED bulbs. LED bulbs also last much longer on average: 15,000 to 50,000 hours, which is about 25 years!

Tip 2: Turn off the lights. Why spend money to light rooms where no one is? Save energy and money by turning the lights on when you enter the room and turning them off when you are the last person to leave. Keep your curtains open during the day to make use of natural light instead of lamps.

Tip 3: Turn off devices and charging blocks completely. Some devices continue to consume energy even when they are on standby or “off”. A rule of thumb is to unplug devices and chargers that are not in use. You can easily switch off multiple devices by plugging them into a power strip and to turn off the big red button.

We hope these simple tips can help you save energy and money. Do you have any tips of your own? We would love to hear them in the comments!
