Tip #3 – Learn unusual rules and symbols

What is worse than being punished for something you didn't even know was wrong! Avoid “surprise fines” by paying extra attention to these unusual traffic laws and road signs.

Watch out for shark's teeth. Fortunately, these teeth don't bite – but approach them with caution! If you encounter a row of them with the sharp point towards you, yield to traffic at the intersection. These “teeth” often replace the “yield” and “priority” signs that are common in other countries.

At an equal intersection, right has priority over left. Most intersections in residential areas are not marked: no shark's teeth and no priority or traffic signs. At an unmarked intersection, always give priority to vehicles coming from the right.

In the above example, the blue car must wait until the red car has passed in any direction. Only when the red car has passed can the blue car go.

The U-turn sign above means it is FORBIDDEN to make a U-turn. So really don't do it!

Some countries only place signs when it IS permitted to make a U-turn. In the Netherlands, it is exactly the other way around: U-turns are always permitted UNLESS you see the sign above it.

Again, if you see a U-turn sign with a red circle around it, it is forbidden to make a U-turn!

This diamond-shaped sign indicates that you are on a priority road, so you can ignore the “yield to the right” rule here. Stay alert, however, because the next sign with black diagonal stripes means you no longer have priority.
